EVENT | Harlem Globetrotters take over TO

Photo via Facebook
I don't usually cover any sports related events, but when I was invited to check out the Harlem Globetrotters here in Toronto, I couldn't say no. They brought their 'Fans Rule' tour to Ricoh Coliseum last weekend and I had the pleasure of snapping the action courtside.

Take a look:

This is probably my favourite photo, so much yes. They are hilarious, guys.

Earlier in the week, Globetrotters Flight Time and Bull Bullard stopped by a local school for a presentation on anti-bullying. I chatted with Bull about why it's important they get involved:

Harlem Globetrotters give back on and off the courts

The Harlem Globetrotters have been entertaining audiences worldwide for more than 85 years and although they are known for their incredible basketball skills and energetic games, it’s what they do once they step off the court that takes them to the next level.

As Ambassadors of Goodwill, the Harlem Globetrotters take the time to get involved in various programs that encourage youth involvement and awareness, such as C.H.E.E.R. and Smile Patrol. In support of the International Day of Pink on April 9, Globetrotters Flight Time Lang and Bull Bullard visited Claude Watson School of the Arts in Toronto to do a presentation on the ABCs of Bullying Prevention, a new community outreach program that focuses on “Action, Bravery and Compassion.”

Bull explains the importance of starting to teach these lessons at a young age. “That’s when they listen and that’s when they’re most keen,” says Bull. “Especially if they have a role model out there, whether it’s a Harlem Globetrotter or anyone of celebrity status, they’re going to zone in and listen to them.“

They aim to spread important messages to today’s youth. “The best advice I got as a kid was to speak up for myself. My thing was though, that I never did. So now our message to the kids is to make sure they do speak up,” says Bull. “We want to make sure they do take action.”
